Images may seem like a straightforward content. Despite that, there are ways to optimize it. Optimized images will bring targeted traffic to your site. Every single image on the site should have an alt attribute. The alt attribute is the text that will pop up when you hovers the mouse over it. The alt text, also known as alternative text shows the text that cannot be displayed directly on the site. The alt text can be read by the search engine. The purpose of using the alt attribute is to allow the user to know what image is displayed on the site if he happens to use a browser that does not support images.

Besides, the alt text can be treated as an anchor text if the image is pointing to another webpage. It is not recommended that you use too many images on the page. If you use too many images as anchor link, it will take away the role of the text link. It is better to use text link as the primary navigation of the site. The images are distractive and will not yield a high conversion rate. Using image links as the site navigation will make your website look odd. The size of the page will become too big. The bigger the size of the page, the longer it will take to load.
When naming image file, you should avoid using generic names. Examples of generic image names are image1.jpg or pic1.jpg. If your site offers free image hosting, you can consider auto naming the image file names. You should avoid lengthy filename. The image filename should contain at the maximum 3 words. Using too many words in the image will make it look spammy. Webmasters should not stuff the keywords into the alt text. Every image on the site should have alt text. If you want to use the image as link, you must supply the alt text. The alt text help the search engine to determine the topic of the page which the image is pointing to. The alt text should be kept short. It should not be too long such as a lengthy paragraph. Long alt text will seem spammy to the search engine so you should avoid it. You should only use image links in the navigation of your site.
It is best if you store the images in one folder. Storing the images in different folders will make the search engine feel that your site is unorganized. You should store the images in their own directory. The image folder should not be under a top folder. If the image folder is buried under several folders, the path will look complicated. By allowing the images have their own directory, you will simply the path to the images.
Webmasters are advised to use commonly supported images file types. Examples of commonly supported image file types are .jpeg, .gif, and .png. The bitmap image format is always high quality. As a result, bitmap image has a large file size. Large file size tends to take a long time to load.
