Recently, in Washington Terrace, what people talk about concerns lysimeters, pierzometers and tensionmeters. This is because for several years, residents of Washington have been experiencing an underground water problem which has plagued them in certain parts of the city. Visit this site for further information on septic systems.
The ambitious project which is expected to cost approximately $75,000 has included the construction of an underground drainage system which will eventually be converted into a storm drain. In building that system, it includes the installation of 15 inch pipes segments at a height greater than two feet below the basement level of homes in the area. The ground water needs to seep into the pipe that's why the open segments will be wrapped by a gravel envelope. It is important to know the amount of water that flows into this underground pipe and the water that slowly drips into the ground which is why measuring devices will be installed with the help of a local university student who will manage the project. In the city's Central Park, the installation of a huge cylindrical lysimeter was the first job. To be able to be included in the ground water flow, the surface water must first pass through beneath a layer of grass wherein under it is planted a cylindrical tank which containing another tank filled with soil.
The water levels in the soil is measured using a tall, measuring device which can be found at the center field line of the park?s baseball diamond where a lysimeter and a staircase going up to the measuring device stands. The piezometers measure the depth of the water table along the underground drainage system while the tensionmeters measure the amount of surface water. Acting as a mechanical root, these later devices have not all been installed yet.
The tensionmeter draws water out of the ground and as the grass begins to dry out, the water returns back to the soil. Due to the high cost of these mechanisms, a total of four sets will be installed with two in the city park and another two on a private residence in the study area. In knowing whether to water to the turf, tensionmeters are used. When you would like to get more information on septic tanks prices check out this site.
Two different churches, residents, and the city's uniformity and output of sprinklers will be included in other tests for the study. With the help of various tests, identifying whether surface water contributes to the groundwater problem is possible if only a good number of residents will cooperative. The groundwater problem in the area shows that the underground drainage system is helping in the lessening of that particular problem as what studies indicate. Life was difficult back then for some of the residents, for they only received insignificant amounts of water when the system hasn?t been installed yet.
The water tables in some areas showed a significant drop of 2.5 feet before May ended until mid June, based on studies. In another study, it says that seepage from its holding tanks is unimportant and is not at all a major contributor to the groundwater situation. The problem on surface water has not yet been clearly studied and yet according to the initial results, it is the city which causes over watering.
The proper watering frequency and the right amount of water to be used will soon be learned by the residents once the conducting of sprinkler tests has been finished. At the conclusion of all the studies, the city mayor is hopeful that residents will attend a series of meetings where the results of the study will be explained.
The mayor said that once the council has heard the comments of the residents that will be the only time they could make a proper decision as to whether have an extensive bonding for a major project or simple resume at a slower rate. The mayor suggested that subdividers be required to install this type of system in future land developments to help eliminate the problem because of the initial success of this underground drain which is able to handle both surface and subsurface water. |
