With rising redundancy rates, a massive 85% of executives are packing their Blackberry’s and mobile phones in their suitcases to take away with them on their annual holidays. The CMI found that one in five city workers head off to the beach with "homework" while nearly 40% regularly check their emails and 30% dial-in to pick up voice mails.
A study from the Chartered Management Institute found that a quarter of employees did not use their full holiday entitlement as they are worried about job security. 37% of respondents said they even tried to cash in their unused holidays even though only 16% of UK companies offer this as an option.
Jo Causon, director of the corporate affairs at the CMI, told the Daily Mail: "There is clearly a fear that 'out of sight means out of mind'. But, without taking a proper break, individual performance can suffer and employers will notice mistakes more than they will absence through holiday."
Some employees are asking for Private Healthcare benefits in exchange for annual leave but only 2% of employers will agree to the swap.
