There were 655,100 jobs vacancies in the three months running up to June 2008. This figure is down by 32,200 over the quarter but up by 5,900 over the year. The industries which showed the largest fall were hotels and restaurants, distribution and finance and business services.
The actual amount of people in employment (calculated up until May 2008) is 29.59 million which is the highest figure since comparable records began in 1971. The number of unemployed people fell this year to 47,000 which brings the total down to 1.62 million.
The unemployment rate for people of working age was 74.9% for the three months running up to may 2008. The working age in the UK is defined a 16-64 for men and 16-59 for women.
The redundancy rate for the year has gone down by 0.1 per 1,000 employees but over the quarter leading up to May 2008 it had risen by 0.4.
