What is IAS?

Pattern of Examination for IAS:
The IAS examination basically comprises of two consecutive steps for the examination:

i) Civil Services (First Round) Examinations (Objective Type) for the selection of applicant for Main Examination.
ii) Civil Services (Main) Examination (Written and Interview) for the selection of applicant for the various services and posts.

The preliminary test is divided into two sets of objective examination totaling to 450 marks.

The main test consists of 9 parts -
• First is the Indian national language which the student can pick amongst the various options given there
• Second is the English paper for 300 marks
• Third is the essay again for 300 marks
• Fourth and fifth are the papers consisting of the general studies subject
• Sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth e consist of various optional subjects from which the student can select any two which is further divided into two sets of papers for 300 marks each

• The next step is the interview again for 300 marks


One thing that has to be noticed here is that the marks obtained in the Indian language paper and English paper, have no effect on the ranking of the student, they are just counted for qualification basis.

Eligibility criteria for IAS:
The age criterion is – 21yrs – 30 yrs of age, though the upper age is flexible for SC/ST and OBC as per our legal system.
The educational criteria specifies that a Bachelor’s degree is required of a recognized university with at least one of these subjects – zoology science, physics, engineering, husbandry of animals etc. or a similar degree..

No. of Attempts:-

General category – Four times
OBC and SC/ST – Seven times

Tips for IAS Exam:
The subject should be chosen with high amount of awareness and precision.
One should keep in mind various points as the paper IAS objective type in the prelims round. One should see the thoroughness, the level, availability of books, type of subject etc before choosing one.
A good amount of general knowledge is significant, hence one needs to be updated with the current events and news by thoroughly reading magazines, newspapers, television, quiz shows etc. to be aware of it, as GK counts majorly in the exam scores and ranking of the candidate.
